There is something inside man that seeks to subdue his
surroundings and process them until he has found a certain degree of comfort
and control. Our physical shortcomings have given rise to man’s pursuit
of technology, and the ability we have to alter ourselves, and our environment
is the defining element that separates man and beast. Technology is fascinating;
by its very nature it makes man feel like he is beyond his environment
and even himself. It gives us the ability to augment our surroundings
until we are satisfied with what is around us, functioning as a shield
between the hostile environment we live in and ourselves. It is because
of this that I do not feel at home in the woods but on a city street,
surrounded by things that afford me time to think, to process. The upward
jagged thrusts of skyscrapers and urban progress excite me beyond what
an untouched forest or mountain ever could. Within the confines of a factory
yard or in the bustle of a busy street I find a meditative rhythm in the
constant, fluid motion of human activity. I feel as if I am part of a
greater consciousness and it is in this setting that my thoughts begin
to congeal and take form. These vertical landscapes begin to sort the
information that I encounter, compartmentalizing the raw footage of my
mind into manageable chunks that I in turn reprocess, leaving me in a
constant state of evaluating my environment and trying to understand my
place in humankind’s vast existence. |
